Can CBD Oil Relieve Pain?
Here is what we know so far about how CBD oil can help with pain relief.
You have likely seen the ads or head people raving about the benefits of CBD for pain relief!
But what is actually known about the correlation between CBD and pain?
There are many reports based on personal experiences about the success of using CBD for pain relief. However, the scientific evidence is far from conclusive. There are very promising signs that CBD oil could help combat inflammation, pain and general discomfort but CBD itself is still in the early stages of research. As research continues we may discover even more benefits and be able to verify these claims.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD stands for cannabidiol which is a naturally occurring compound found in cannabis plants, including hemp. Cannabis plants contain hundreds of these cannabinoids but the two most commonly known cannabinoids are THC and CBD.
THC is known primarily for its effects that leave you feeling “high” whereas CBD does not share the same intoxicating effect. Early studies indicate that CBD and other cannabinoids may provide many other health benefits.
Most CBD products are currently siting in the legal ‘gray’ area here in the United States. However, hemp-derived CBD products are federally legal but can still be labeled illegal at the state level. Hemp is legally classified as a cannabis product that contains very low levels of THC – less than 0.3% of the plan’s weight. Hemp-derived CBD products contain such trace amount of THC that the CBD cannabinoid is the prominent compound which is why it is federally legal.
Now, although hemp-derived CBD products are federally legal there is only one CBD product that is FDA approved. CBD is not currently FDA approved as a dietary supplement which means there is no regulation for CBD products so we urge you to do your research when consuming CBD products.
Is It Safe?
While clinical research on the benefits of CBD oil are still underway, it is widely believed that CBD oil poses little to no risk to most people.
The World Health Organization even stated, “in the human body, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of abuse or dependence potential… to date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD”
With this information in mind it is best that you consult your primary physician or medical professional prior to trying CBD oil. Additionally, as we mentioned earlier it is best to do your research on the CBD products you purchase. Unfortunately, there are a lot of brands that falsly advertise their CBD products by telling you there is more CBD than there really is. Many of these products contain less that 30% of the stated level of CBD on the label. It is best if you purchase your CBD oil from well-reviewed brands that provide lab tests verifying the purity of their ingredients.
Is CBD Oil Effective For Pain Relief?
Although cannabis has been used medicinally throughout the world for ages, our clinical knowledge is very sparse.
There have been animal studies that suggest CBD is promising for pain relief due to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Unfortunately, there is no high-quality human clinical study to confirm these findings.
There are two professional reviews that analyzed and discussed the early findings of cannabinoid consumption and pain in humans. These two reviews were done in the Journal of the American Medical Association and the Journal of Pain
The findings indicate that adults who utilize cannabis are more likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in pain symptoms which is promising. However, we still need more studies and clinical trials to verify these results.
So What Do We Take From This?
We are still in the very early stages of cannabis and CBD research so any person or company that tells you that CBD is a guaranteed solution for pain relief is offering you misleading information.
Although there are studies that indicate the promise of pain relief for CBD, more research. is required to verify and elaborate these claims.
However, the fact that there are no clinical studies to verify these findings, hundreds of thousands of people are using, have used or have considered using CBD as a means to manage pain.
There are studies that have found the CBD is generally well-tolerated in humans and has little to no side effects so if you are curious about trying CBD for pain, talking to a medical professional first would be a good place to start. Additionally, as we mentioned before you need to do your research on the products you purchase!
